Politics Studies in Peking University has a long history. Imperial University of Peking, the predecessor of Peking University, had set up Politics department and Politics major. Since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China, the Political Science has undergone a tortuous course of development.
- In 1982, Peking University reset up Political Science major in China;
- In 1988, Peking University reestablished Department of Political Science and Administrative Management;
- In July 1998, Research Center of Political Development and Governance, Peking University was established;
- In July 1999, Institute of Political Development and Governance, Peking University was established in order to fully leverage theory and make in-depth study of important theoretical and practical issues regarding political development and governance;
- On 26th December 2000, the Institute was approved by the Ministry of Education as one of the 100 Key Research Bases of Humanities and Social Sciences —Key Politics Research Base ;
- In December 2013, as leading unit of Co-Innovation Center for State Governance, the Institute was approved by the Ministry of Education to operate together with four universities and an academy(Peking University, Fudan University, Jilin University, Sun Yat-Sen University and Chinese Academy of Fiscal Science);
- In 2016, the institute was renamed as “Institute of State Governance Studies, Peking University”.
