Joel Migdal, Professor of International Studies, University of Washington , delivered an academic lecture “STATE IN SOCIETY” on March 11 in PKU at the invitation of Institute of State Governance Studies, Office of the International Relations of PKU and School of Government.

　　Professor Migdal obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1972. He is a representative figure of the state theory, especially the theory of state social relations. The theory of "country in society" put forward by him broke through the traditional view of the state, broke the boundaries between the state and society, and analyzed the interaction between them, which had an important impact on the academic circle.

　　In this lecture, he elaborated the approach, arguing how it gave insight into the central questions that social science has asked over the last two centuries.
