Wang Puqu, Liu Shuyang: An Analysis of the Equality View of Contemporary Utilitarianism

Abstract: Equality is an important value of political philosophy. The traditional view is that utilitarianism is based on the maximization of individual utility, and has low correlation with the equality value. However, after a long period of transformation, contemporary Western utilitarianism already has an equal value, and its construction logic has self-consistently achieved unification between the maximization of utilitarianism and equality. Contemporary utilitarianism goes beyond the foundation of traditional utilitarian equality and demonstrates the maximization of utilitarianism and equality in both moral possibilities and practical feasibility. It provides distribution results that meet equality requirements and responds to many criticisms in the academic community. However, contemporary utilitarianism does not go beyond the theoretical logic and thinking path of traditional utilitarianism. Using Marxist research methods, it is found that the contemporary western utilitarian concept of equality has fundamental flaws in the theoretical basis, basic content, and major perspectives. Only the philosophical foundation and social claims of the Marxist concept of equality are the true arguments and realistic path for achieving social equality.
